Installing a new muzzle device: Step-by-Step

NOTE: Before starting, always perform a safety check to ensure your firearm is unloaded and completely clear of ammunition.

Tools Needed:

  • A sturdy vice clamp to securely hold your AR-15 during installation.
  • A high-quality torque wrench or armorer's wrench that is capable of delivering precise torque.  Avoid using a standard wrench; an improperly applied torque is unsafe.
  • The correct crush washer for your specific muzzle device and barrel threads.  Have extra crush washers on hand since they are single-use installation components.
  • Properly sized wrench for your muzzle device.

Steps:

  1. Prepare your firearm: Unload the weapon, and ensure it's safe. Secure the firearm in a vice clamp, ensuring the barrel is properly supported.
  2. Remove the Existing Muzzle Device (if any): Use the appropriate wrench to remove the old muzzle device carefully.

  6. Verify Timing (if necessary): Some muzzle devices have specific orientation requirements. Ensure proper timing as outlined in the manufacturer's instructions.
    1. Visual Inspection (or Use of Boresight):  Carefully examine the muzzle device's ports or baffles in relation to the barrel.  The goal is to have the ports optimally positioned relative to the barrel.  A laser boresight, shined through the barrel, can aid in precise alignment of the ports to the path of the bullet.
    2. Gradual Tightening and Adjustment:  Slightly loosen the muzzle device and rotate it by small increments (e.g., 1/8th to 1/4th of a turn at a time), carefully observing the port alignment.
    3. Testing (Optional, but Recommended): If possible, test-fire the weapon on a safe range under controlled circumstances,  paying close attention to recoil and muzzle rise. Minor adjustments may be needed to fine-tune the timing.  Always prioritize safe gun handling practices.
    4. Final Tightening: Once the optimal timing is achieved, use a torque wrench to tighten the muzzle device to the manufacturer's specified torque.  This is vital for ensuring a secure and reliable connection.
    5. Re-Inspection: After final tightening, double-check the alignment.
    6. Important Considerations: Manufacturer Instructions – Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions for specific timing recommendations for your particular muzzle device model.  They may provide detailed diagrams or other guidance.
  7. Final Inspection: Double-check the tightness of the muzzle device. If you experience excessive resistance or the device is unusually difficult to tighten, STOP. Check your work, ensure the crush washer is installed correctly, and refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

Troubleshooting
